The successful series of the Graz Big Band Workshop is a part of youth development and the Life Long Learning program of the university of music and performing arts, Graz. The first edition of the workshop took place in the summer of 2016. Following then, we call each summer musicians of all ages to the jazz institute of the university to take part in the workshop. The workshop offers participants of all ages and levels a platform to expand and develop their musical skills in jazz, especially in the big band genre. Lecturers are members of the Graz Composers Orchestra or the academic staff from the jazz institute. Together with the participants, they work on a full-length big band program. They place a particular focus on the language of jazz, phrasing, improvisation, playing together in a big band, stylistics, and the correction of instrument-specific problems. The result will be presented within a big band concert in the Graz Orpheum or the MuMuTh of the university.
